Hutchinson Sports Arena

Hutchinson Sports Arena is a great example of what’s possible when a community comes together to support a goal. The project began when the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) expressed their concerns about the facility and how addressing those needs could improve the overall tournament at the arena, the host of the tournament since 1952.  The city listened to their concerns and retained SJCF Architecture teamed with Sink Combs Dethlefs to conduct an in depth review of the needs of the arena and prepare a master plan for improvements. After an extensive community engagement process and informational campaign, the community responded by approving a special purpose sales tax to fund the project.

The main idea behind the project was to modernize the arena, improve fan experience and update the venue to have the ability to attract a variety of events to the Hutchinson community.  The final design was completed in phases and addressed the goals of the City and improved the buildings deficiencies.  Construction was completed while the building remained in use throughout the entire project.

The project included major renovations and an addition that expanded the use of the facility throughout the year. The existing arena bowl was upgraded with the addition of air conditioning, new gym flooring, new graphics, ADA seating, new sound system, and two video boards. The north addition included three full-size gyms and four locker rooms that are used by Hutchinson Community College and the Hutchinson Recreation Commission, a new weight room and training facility, prep kitchen and storage.  The athletic offices were also renovated to allow HCC coaches and assistant coaches to be located in the same area, with a new multi-story entrance, which includes two elevators to all levels, new restrooms, concessions and a large gathering area for events. The two story-glazing floods the lobby with natural light and reflects the colorful exterior artwork to create a warm welcome to all who visit the arena.
