Derby Recreation Center Renovations
As a part of its master-plan, the Derby Recreation Commission focused on converting a worn out building which no longer met the community’s needs into a state-of-the-art recreation center with programs and equipment for all ages and fitness levels.
A bright, spacious lobby with a nearby relaxation lounge encourages social interaction among members and promotes a sense of community. The interactive environment of Derby Rec Center encourages members to visit before the start of the work day and on lunch breaks. A dedicated children’s center supports the idea that exercise is a family activity.
An existing multipurpose room was converted into three group exercise studios, and a yoga studio was fitted with indirect, dimmable light for a relaxing atmosphere. Indoor track and cardio/strength training areas were expanded on the second floor. The locker rooms feature clean, elegant finishes with a spa-like feel. Detailed consideration was given to all finishes, from high impact sports flooring to lighting and acoustical design.
Frank Seitz, Superintendent of Recreation for the Derby Recreation Commission, said, “The architects helped identify what areas were priorities and what could be repurposed…This renovation has far exceeded our initial goals of the project, improving competitiveness in the industry and our service to customers, along with modern amenities and a classic appearance.”
