Architecture

Our History

Legacy. Foundation. Future.

We do so much more than design buildings. For more than 60 years, we’ve ideated, collaborated, and implemented to help realize meaningful spaces. Spaces that enrich lives, build communities, and make the world a better place.

On June 1, 1957, Robert Schaefer and Henry Schirmer, Jr. formed SJCF’s predecessor, Schaefer and Schirmer Architects, under the principles of honesty, cooperation, positivity, respect, continued learning, imagination and practicality. Even then, they realized the importance of creating architecture with a higher purpose.

“We stress the importance of proper programming which together with the interest of the architect fashions design to the desire of the community. This principle, the one most often lacking, brings only great architecture.”
— Robert Schaefer

Today, we’re still building on this foundation, having accomplished hundreds of projects across the U.S. in every scope, size, and area, including corporate, community, education, recreation, and worship. And there’s so much more to come.

After all these years, one thing remains the same: Our clients mean everything to us. If we can bring their visions to life, that’s a job well done.

About Us

People first.

Whether it’s our clients or our employees, we put people first, investing our time, energy and talent in projects that will make their lives better.

Our clients become family to us. We strive to meet their needs in ways that extend beyond their expectations, and we stay in touch with them long after the formal process is complete to make sure they’re still satisfied.

We believe in working hard, but we also realize that our employees are people. That’s why we encourage work-life balance and offer a supportive environment conducive to personal and professional growth. As a result, many of our employees have been with us for decades.

We’re at our best when we work together — with each other, our clients, and communities. We fully engage at every stage of the design process, from achieving buy-in from key stakeholders through concept, design, construction and follow-up. The result is the perfect blend of exceptional design with superior client service.

Shannon’s Story

Shannon’s desire to be an architect started early in life when she first saw blueprints during a learning unit on houses in the third grade.

“I went home and told my parents that I wanted to be an architect, and I never looked back.”

Today, Shannon is not only a successful architect, but also president of what she believes to be one of the strongest architectural firms in the region.

“With SJCF, you get the A team. Projects are not just handed off – management stays involved and sees the project through completion. Our small size and strong culture enables us to work together as a team to provide excellent results and nurture client relationships.”

The dedication to hard work and quality product originally attracted Shannon to SJCF when she was first starting as an intern. Like so many SJCF employees, she’s built her career at the firm, joining within one year after college graduation.

Anyone who has worked with Shannon will tell you she exemplifies SJCF’s culture and ethics and sets the bar high. Through her dedication to client service, building consensus, strategic decision-making and efforts to keep communication channels open across the organization, Shannon has helped establish the groundwork that will allow SJCF continued growth in the future.

Shannon will be the first to tell you that her successes are not solely her own – she shares them with the entire SJCF team.

“When I think about the future of the firm, I am encouraged, and look forward to continued opportunities.”

Throughout her career, Shannon has embraced the opportunity to be involved in numerous project types and in all aspects of projects – from programming through construction observation. For the past several years, she has concentrated her efforts on master planning and initial design of projects including needs assessments and concept diagrams. She has also been active with many clients in community engagement processes.

Recent master plan studies and projects that Shannon has developed include Wichita Public Schools, Geary County Schools, Derby Public Schools, and the Hutchinson Sports Arena Addition and Renovation.

Brad’s Story

Brad Biddle’s career at SJCF Architecture started by being in the right place at the right time.

“The summer before my senior year of college, I was looking for a design internship in Wichita and not having any luck. As I was driving past SJCF one day, I decided to go in on a whim. Strangely enough, it almost seemed as though they had been waiting for me. They offered me an internship that day, and I’ve worked here ever since.”

Brad first became acquainted with architectural design in high school when a guidance counselor noted his budding talents in both art and math. Lucky for Brad, that was the advice he needed to set him on the path to a rewarding career.

As a leader of the SJCF team, Brad is known both for his superior design talent and his efforts to look out for team members. He is a collaborator and innovative thinker with the perseverance and patience to see projects through to the best possible outcomes.

For Brad, the most satisfying part of architectural design is knowing the spaces he helps create will be put to good use. “We’re always asking ourselves: What can we do to make people’s lives better?”

He also enjoys the ongoing relationships they have with clients and having the opportunity to work with them on a variety of dynamic, challenging projects. “Seeing projects go from paper to real, physical buildings is very satisfying.”

Outside of work, Brad enjoys spending time with his family, especially his seven grandchildren. He also enjoys traveling, playing golf, attending fine arts events, and cheering for Kansas State University athletics.

Terry’s Story

Terry Wiggers first experienced interest in architectural design in high school. A member of the school’s golf team, he sketched designs of golf courses – complete with contours and elevations – on napkins during his free time. Years later, Terry hasn’t officially designed any golf courses, but he has been a driving force behind many functional and beautiful structures and spaces.

Terry proudly describes himself as an ‘SJCF native’ who started his career at the firm and still enjoys coming to work every day. “It’s easy to come to work when you like the people you work with.”

Among the SJCF team, Terry is known as a leader with the ability to cultivate meaningful relationships – with staff, clients and communities. His solid technical and architectural expertise, listening skills and teaching abilities make him an excellent resource for clients and a great mentor to employees.

For Terry, the ability to help clients achieve their goals makes all his hard work worthwhile. “There’s nothing better than hearing how your work has helped clients achieve their goals.”

Like many SJCF employees, Terry enjoys spending time giving back to the community, through volunteering with organizations such as Junior Achievement, Wichita Rotary Club, and Wichita Festivals, Inc.

Outside of work, Terry enjoys building and flying radio-controlled airplanes, working on home projects, going on road-trip adventures with his wife, and cheering for his son, who is a talented musician.
